Conservation and Wildlife

Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is the most prominent conservation organization on Topsail Island and one of the most recognized sea turtle hospitals on the East Coast. Located in Topsail Beach, the center was founded by Jean Beasley and is named for her daughter Karen. It operates year-round to rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured sea turtles — primarily loggerheads, but also Kemp's ridley, green, and occasionally leatherback turtles found stranded or injured along the NC coast.

The center offers free public educational tours during the summer season (donations are welcomed and fund operations). Tours provide a look inside a working sea turtle hospital, with patients in rehabilitation at various stages of recovery. For many visitors, it is the most memorable experience of their Topsail Island trip. The center also coordinates beach nest monitoring during the nesting season from May through August, and nest sightings and hatchling events are announced on social media. Volunteers are actively recruited and trained for both hospital support and beach monitoring roles.

North Carolina Coastal Federation

The North Carolina Coastal Federation (NCCF) is a statewide coastal conservation organization with a strong presence in the Topsail area. Founded in 1982, the NCCF works on habitat restoration, water quality, shoreline stabilization, and policy issues affecting the NC coast. In the Topsail area specifically, the federation has coordinated oyster reef restoration projects in the Intracoastal Waterway system and shoreline stabilization work using living shoreline techniques.

The federation operates the Crystal Coast Center in Newport and the Southeast Center in Wrightsville Beach, which serves the Topsail area and surrounding coast. It engages volunteers in habitat restoration events and advocates for science-based coastal policy at the state and federal level. Membership and donations support ongoing conservation work across the NC coast.

NC Wildlife Resources Commission — Coastal Loggerhead Monitoring

The NC Wildlife Resources Commission coordinates sea turtle nest monitoring along the state's barrier islands, including Topsail Island, in partnership with local volunteers and the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center. During nesting season from late May through August, trained volunteers walk beach sections before sunrise to identify new nests, mark them for protection, and monitor them through incubation. The loggerhead is the primary nesting species on Topsail Island and a threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act. Volunteer opportunities are coordinated through the sea turtle center and Wildlife Resources Commission programs.

History and Heritage

Topsail Island Historical Society — Missiles & More Museum

The Topsail Island Historical Society preserves and shares the history of Topsail Island, with particular focus on Operation Bumblebee — the classified U.S. Navy guided missile testing program that operated on Topsail Island from 1946 to 1948. The program built a series of reinforced concrete observation towers along the island to track missile launches over the Atlantic, and several of these towers still stand. The society operates the Missiles & More Museum in Topsail Beach, housed in one of the original towers, which tells the story of the program and the island's broader history.

The museum is open to the public during the summer season and is a genuine historical attraction unlike anything else at a North Carolina beach destination. The society accepts memberships, donations, and volunteers to help staff the museum and expand its archival collections.

Location: Topsail Beach, NC
How to help: Membership, museum volunteer, donations for preservation

Human Services and Food Security

Bread of Life Food Pantry — Surf City

The Bread of Life Food Pantry in Surf City serves residents of the Topsail area with food assistance on a no-questions-asked basis. It operates out of a local church and is supported by community donations of food and funds. Food insecurity is a real issue in coastal NC communities where seasonal employment creates income volatility, and the pantry fills a genuine gap for local residents navigating tough stretches. Donations of non-perishable food and financial contributions can be made directly to the pantry.
