This Data Agreement explains, in plain English, how Topsail Area Local Businesses ("we," "us") handles the data associated with your business listing, account, and activity on topsailbiz.com. This applies to business owners who claim a listing, create an account, or use our paid services.
What Business Data We Store
When you claim your business or create an account, we store:
- Your business name, address, phone number, website, hours, and category
- Your account email address and securely hashed password
- Photos you upload for your business listing
- An editorial description of your business (written by us or approved by you)
- Events you post (title, description, date, time, location)
- Your notification preferences (which emails you want to receive)
Where Your Data Comes From
Business listings in our directory come from three sources:
- Public sources: Google Places and OpenStreetMap provide business names, addresses, phone numbers, and categories. This information is already publicly available.
- You: When you claim your listing, you can update any information. Anything you provide directly replaces public-source data.
- Us: We write editorial descriptions for every business in our directory. These are based on publicly available information and are meant to help visitors find your business.
How We Use Your Data
- Directory listing: Your business information is displayed publicly on your listing page so visitors can find you.
- Events calendar: Events you post appear on our public events page and on your business page.
- Email notifications: If you opt in, we use your email to send digests, weekend previews, and follow alerts through Postmark.
- Payment processing: If you subscribe to a paid plan, Authorize.net processes your payment. We never see or store your full card number.
- Analytics: We track which listings get views so we can show you how your business is performing. This data is aggregated and not shared with other businesses.
What We Will Never Do
- Sell your data to third parties
- Share your email address with other businesses
- Send you marketing emails you did not sign up for
- Use your business data to compete with you
- Store your payment card details on our servers
Your Rights
As a business owner on topsailbiz.com, you can:
- Update your listing at any time through your account dashboard.
- Request removal of your business from the directory by emailing hello@topsailbiz.com. We will remove it within 7 business days.
- Delete your account and all associated data by contacting us.
- Export your data — request a copy of all data we hold about your business.
- Unsubscribe from any or all email notifications at any time.
- Cancel your subscription at any time with no cancellation fees.
Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your data:
- Passwords are hashed (never stored in plain text)
- Payment processing is handled by PCI-compliant Authorize.net
- Our server uses SSL encryption for all connections
- Database backups run daily with 30-day retention
- Server access is restricted to key-based SSH authentication
Existing Users
If your business was listed before this Data Agreement was published, your listing was built from publicly available information. You are not required to agree to this document to remain listed. This agreement applies when you create an account, claim your listing, or use features like event posting and subscriptions.
